The Garage Door Sticks After Painting: What to Report

A change in operation after painting needs assessment before more use. Describe the work and the sticking point without forcing the door apart.

Record the work that preceded the change

Tell the provider when painting took place, which surfaces were treated and whether the door operated normally beforehand. Keep the product information if available. The sequence is useful context, but it does not by itself prove that the coating is the only reason the door now sticks.

Avoid forcing the sections or seals

Do not pry between panels, pull on loaded hardware or increase opener force to break the door free. Describe the point where movement stops using what you have already observed. If the door is unstable or partly open, keep people away while arranging assessment.

Coordinate the repair and finish decisions

Ask what needs attention mechanically and whether any proposed work affects the new finish. If a separate painting provider was involved, retain its work description for the discussion. Check the original door’s care guidance before agreeing to another coating or treatment as the remedy.

Your questions

Can I simply run the opener until it releases?

Repeated force is not a suitable way to free a sticking door. Stop operating it and have the cause assessed before normal use resumes.

Does repainting mean the door must be replaced?

Not automatically. The condition of the assembly and the assessed cause determine the options; the timing of the paintwork alone does not settle the repair.
