Garage Door Handles: Safe Gripping Points for Manual Use

A sectional garage door needs suitable gripping points for manual operation. Decorative handles and the joints between sections should not be assumed to serve that purpose.

Know which features are functional

DASMA distinguishes handles from other suitable gripping points provided by the manufacturer. Some are recessed rather than projecting. Ask the installer to identify the approved points on your actual door; a carriage-style decorative strap or handle is not automatically an operating handle.

Keep fingers away from section joints

The gap or joint between moving sections is not an appropriate place to grip a door. Do not rely on a familiar appearance to decide where to put your hands. Have normal use demonstrated when the system is safe, and keep children away from moving doors and operating controls.

Plan for an outage before it happens

Locate the product instructions for manual operation and the opener release. A damaged, unusually heavy or unstable door needs professional assessment before anyone attempts to move it. If the garage has no other entry, discuss access arrangements during installation rather than improvising after a power failure.

Your questions

Can I pull the door by decorative carriage hardware?

Only if the manufacturer identifies it as suitable for operation. Decoration may not be designed or attached for that load.

Does this mean I should release an open door to practice?

No. Follow the installed manufacturer’s safety guidance, and do not release an unstable or damaged door. Ask for a demonstration under safe conditions.
